iOS 14 new release: What are new features and problems coming to iPhone?

Apple has come up with its new release for iPhone iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1. This latest update is focused on compatible iPhone and iPad models. It has been just a month when the company comes with their update of iOS 14.0.1 and iPadOS 14.0.1, and now we have a new update as the bugs got fixed in this update. Apart from the many improvements and fixing bugs, the iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 comes with 10-bit HDR video playback and edit support to existing iPhone and iPad models.

iOS 14.1: What’s new?

Apple has provided the changelog for iOS 14.1. This version provides support for 10-bit HDR video playback and editing in the Photos App for iPhone or the latest models. The latest iPhone 12 series comes with a 10-bit HDR video recording, and the video recorded by these iPhones wouldn’t be able to play on the older models due to hardware limitations. But now, the existing iPhone users would be able to watch and edit videos they receive from the latest iPhone models.

Apart from this, you can find fixes for the problems that were causing some widgets, folders, and icons to appear in small or reduced size. There is also a fix to the issue in which on dragging the widgets on the home screen leads to removing apps from folders. Fixes for issues where the emails in Mail were sent from an incorrect alias and incoming calls were prevented from displaying region information.

Earlier, there was an issue in which the lock screen was an emerging call button to overlap with the text input box when zoomed display mode. This issue has been fixed now. Similarly, there was an issue in the Calculator app in which the zeros are not appearing on the screen, it has been fixed now. Also, the users were restricted to download or add songs in their library, it is also fixed.

The issue of temporarily reducing streaming video resolution at playback has been resolved. It also addresses an issue of the Files app which was causing MDM-managed cloud service providers to incorrectly display as unavailable. You can also find improvements in the Ubiquiti wireless access points’ compatibility.

There were some existing issues in the Apple Watch which have been also fixed. For e.g. the users were not able to set up a family member’s Apple Watch, while in the other one, the Apple Watch case material was displayed incorrectly in the Apple Watch app.

However, iOS 14.1 doesn’t address the issue of battery draining which was introduced in the iOS 14 release.  Apple even addressed this issue in public and provided a workaround – i.e. to restore the iPhone after deleting all the stored content.

iPadOS 14.1: What’s new?

Just like the release of iOS 14.1, you will find fixes for iPadOS 14.1 regarding the widgets, folders, and icons on the home screen, mail app, music library, video playback, and also the Files app. There is a 10-bit HDR video playback, editing support to the Photos app for the iPad Pro 12.9 inch (2nd generation), and the other latest models.

Major Features:

  • Compatibility with all devices able to run iOS 13
  • Home screen redesign with widgets
  • New App Library
  • Picture in Picture
  • App Clips
  • No full-screen calls
  • Privacy enhancements
  • Translate app
  • Cycling and EV routes
  • Better Messaging Features
  • Car Keys as well as Car Play
  • Smarter Siri

Apple in June 2020 introduced the latest version of its iOS operating system, iOS 14, which was released on September 16. iOS 14 is one of Apple’s biggest iOS updates to date, introducing Home screen design changes, major new features, updates for existing apps, Siri improvements, and many other tweaks that streamline the iOS interface.

First and foremost, iOS 14 brings a redesigned Home Screen that includes support for widgets for the first time. Widgets can be dragged from the Today view right onto the Home Screen, and can be pinned in different sizes.

With a Smart Stack feature, the iPhone can use on-device intelligence to surface the right widget based on time, location, and activity. Each Home Screen page can display widgets customized for work, travel, sports, and more. The Today section where widgets are housed has also been redesigned, and there’s a widgets gallery where users can choose new widgets from apps and customize those widgets.
