As per the latest Statista report, there are more than 1.85 million apps on the Apple App Store by May 2020. But the bad thing is that the average retention rate of an app is merely 5% within a month after downloading it. It simply shows that competition among the apps has crossed the threshold.
There are many factors that can determine the ranking of your app in the top search results. In this article, we will explain the best techniques by which we can optimize the app for App Store Optimization. What factors can contribute to a better App Store evaluation and much more…
What is App Store Optimization and how does it work?
ASO or App-store optimization is a collective epithet for all the practices which can improve the visibility of your app in the App Store.
It involves methods of optimizing your app listing description, visuals, App store reviews, retention rates, and performance of the app. In this article, we are going to only focus on the app optimization in only iOS app store optimization. Let’s begin…
1. Listing Descriptions and Keywords:
Before writing an app description you should make the list of keywords that are related to your app. Many keyword research tools are available for this. Make a category of higher searched keywords and the other phrases which have lower click-through rates (CTR) among users. If there is a phrase that doesn’t tempt users to click on the listing, then Apple might think that your app is irrelevant and will lower down the rank.
Try to use long-tail keywords that have at least three words. There is a great search volume of more than 10,000 for nearly 30% of these long-tail keywords.
2. Include keywords in these 3 sections:
Apple App store, unlike Google Play Store, doesn’t scan all descriptions for keywords. There are 3 sections in which you can use the keywords, these are:
- Name of App: The character limit of the app’s name is only 30 characters. Try to make the name easy to recognize and doesn’t sound like other brands. You should know that app names with keywords performed twice as better as those without.
- Subtitle: The subtitle is a section just below your App name to summarize the functioning of your app. Alike to the name of the app, it can be a maximum of 30 characters. Here are some tips:
- Use keywords separated by a comma but without space. For e.g., Property, Real Estate, Home
- Don’t use plural forms or any special sign unless they are necessary. It will waste your characters limit.
3. Leverage Promotional Text and Long Description:
The character limit of promotional text is 170 characters. It doesn’t affect the ranking of your app. Here you should explain the uniqueness of your app. Try to attract your users within the initial 2-3 lines which the user can see without clicking on Read more button.
4. The app icon should be distinguishable:
The icon of your app should completely stand out. You can use contrast colors. You can also create one of a kind brand and can opt for a bold statement. A unique icon makes your app more recognizable.
5. App Preview Video:
App preview videos can be up to 30 seconds long which shows your app functionality. However, you can add 3 videos showing the full detail of your app. The first App Preview is auto-played on the listing with the sound off. So you must catch the users’ attention within these seconds.
6. Feature Necessary Screens of your app:
You can feature a maximum of 10 screenshots of your product in the app. If there is no App Preview video then the first two or three screenshots will show at the listing top. The screen should be able to understand the app functionality in a summarized way.
7. Boast Statistics or Social proof:
If you have achieved a milestone or a customer that you are really proud of, then you can display it in your screenshots.
For example, Booking.com in its listing showcase that they feature over 27 million places, which have received a whopping 135 million users reviews.
